How Much Does a Small Sandstone Temple Cost?

Few home mandir options last for generations and still fit into an apartment corner. A small sandstone temple does both. But before you order one, you probably want to know the sandstone temple price for your size and design.
We are Nancy Stone Articles. We have been carving stone temples in 21, Agra Rd, Sikandra, Rajasthan 303326 since 2020. In this guide, we cover the small sandstone temple designs we make most often, what they cost, which stone suits which space, and the mistakes buyers commonly make.
How Much Does a Small Sandstone Temple Cost?
A small sandstone temple for home costs about ₹19,000 to ₹69,000, depending on size, carving and stone. Here is the sandstone temple price by size:
| Size | Approx. price (temple only) |
|---|---|
| 2 ft | ₹19,000 – ₹39,000 |
| 3 ft | ₹29,000 – ₹49,000 |
| 4 ft | ₹44,000 – ₹69,000 |
Installation is charged separately.
Within each range, the price depends mainly on carving depth, stone thickness and design. A plain 2 ft mandir sits near the bottom of its range. A fully carved one sits near the top. For reference, our catalogue lists a 2 ft red sandstone temple at ₹29,000.
What Do “2 ft, 3 ft and 4 ft” Actually Mean?

Before you compare prices, confirm what the size refers to. In our work, the size is the width of the temple. Height is higher because of the arch and shikhar. Approximate dimensions:
| Size | Width × Depth × Height | Approx. weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft | 2 × 2 × 4 ft | 100–200 kg | Apartments, wall niches, office prayer corners |
| 3 ft | 3 × 3 × 6 ft | 200–400 kg | Living room corners, small pooja rooms |
| 4 ft | 4 × 4 × 8 ft | 300–500 kg | Dedicated pooja rooms, larger homes |
Sandstone is heavy. Ask about the finished weight before you decide where the temple will stand. This matters most for upper floors and old buildings.
What Affects Sandstone Temple Price?
Two temples of the same size can have very different prices. These are the reasons:
- Carving depth: Deep, detailed carving takes far more labour than simple borders.
- Stone type and thickness: Thicker stone costs more and weighs more.
- Number of components: Pillars, jali panels, shikhar and brackets each add time.
- Design complexity: Custom drawings cost more than standard designs.
- Finishing: The level of polish and surface treatment changes the cost.
- Installation: It is charged separately and depends on the site, floor and access.
This is why a plain 2 ft mandir and a heavily carved 2 ft mandir can be far apart in price.
Small Sandstone Temple Design Ideas for Home
Most home temple designs use a few basic elements: pillars, arches, jali, a shikhar and carved panels. Here is how the designs differ in practice.
| Design | What it looks like | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Plain traditional mandir | Clean structure, limited carving | Lowest cost and easiest to clean. Good for compact spaces |
| Carved pillar design | Carved pillars on either side of the deity | Adds a traditional look without extra floor space |
| Arched mandir | Cusped or plain arch at the front | Gives a clear front elevation. Popular for pooja temples |
| Jali panel design | Perforated stone screens on the sides or back | Looks beautiful, but deep jali collects dust and diya soot. Choose it only if you will clean it regularly |
| Shikhar design | Tower-style top in the north Indian temple manner | Adds height, so check your ceiling first |
| Floral carved mandir | Floral borders on pillars and panels | Adds detail without increasing overall size |
| Rajasthani-style mandir | Arches, pillars, jali and brackets in local style | Our most requested style for home |
| Open-front design | No door, deity fully visible | Easiest for daily puja and aarti |
| Custom design | Built from your image or drawing | Share your reference and exact wall space |

Which Sandstone Mandir Suits Which Space?

- Apartment or compact home: A 2 ft or 3 ft mandir with an open front and light carving works best. Heavy jali makes a small temple look crowded.
- Living room: A 3 ft temple against a solid wall looks balanced. Leave enough space in front for people to sit or stand during puja.
- Dedicated pooja room: A 4 ft mandir with carved pillars and a shikhar works well. Measure the ceiling height before you decide.
- Office pooja corner: A 2 ft plain or arched mandir is usually enough.
In every room, the floor must be level and solid. Once a stone temple is installed, it is hard to move.
Bansi Paharpur, Dholpur or Red Sandstone: Which One to Pick?
The stone you choose also affects the sandstone temple price and the final look.
Bansi Paharpur Sandstone Temple
This stone comes from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur region. It has a warm pink to light-rose tone and carves cleanly, which is why it is widely used for temples. Pick it for a soft, traditional look. Read more on our Bansi Paharpur Sandstone page, or see the Bansi Paharpur Sandstone Temple we built.
Dholpur Sandstone Home Temple
This comes from the Dholpur district of Rajasthan. Its tones run lighter, from cream to beige and pale pink. It works well in homes with light interiors. Buyers who want a subtle, even colour tend to prefer it.
Red Sandstone Temple
Red sandstone is deeper in colour, from red to reddish-brown. It gives a strong, traditional look, especially on carved pillars and panels. See our Red Sandstone Temple Design page and the Pink Sandstone Temple collection to compare colours side by side.
Our advice: Look at real samples in daylight before you decide. A phone screen will not show the true colour. Shade and veining change from piece to piece in natural stone. That is part of the material, not a defect.
Sandstone vs Marble Temple
| Sandstone | Marble | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Earthy pink, red or cream | Lighter, more uniform |
| Feel | Natural, slightly textured | Smooth, polished |
| Best for | Traditional carved mandirs | Polished, light-coloured designs |
| Care | Porous, so wipe oil and kumkum promptly | Also stains, but polish hides marks longer |
Neither is “better.” Choose sandstone for a traditional temple look. Choose marble if you prefer a bright, polished finish.
Best Direction for a Home Temple (Vastu)
Vastu guidance most often points to the north-east (Ishaan) corner for a home temple. North or east are the alternatives. Ideally, the person praying faces east or north.
Avoid placing the temple:
- Under a staircase
- In a bedroom
- On a wall shared with a bathroom
Traditions differ. If direction matters to your family, tell us before we finalise the dimensions. Once the stone is cut, the design cannot be changed.
How We Make a Small Stone Temple
- Design and size confirmation: We agree on dimensions, stone, style and direction using your room measurements or a reference image.
- Cutting and carving: The stone is cut to size. Pillars, panels, arches and jali are then carved individually.
- Finishing and trial assembly: Each component is finished and checked against the agreed dimensions.
- Delivery and installation: The temple is delivered in pieces and assembled at your location. Delivery usually takes 1–3 weeks, depending on carving and distance.
Our factory is in Manpur. Cutting, carving and finishing happen at our workshop in Langada Balaji Gurjar Seemla Burja, Rajasthan 303509, both near Dausa. We have completed 100+ temple and stone handicraft projects across 25+ states.
How to Care for a Sandstone Temple
- Dust regularly with a dry, soft brush or cloth, especially in carved areas and jali.
- Wipe spills quickly. Sandstone is porous, so ghee, oil, turmeric and kumkum can leave marks if they dry.
- Keep diyas on a tray or plate. Soot settles into carving and is hard to remove.
- Avoid harsh acids and strong cleaners. They can damage the surface.
- If the temple is in a semi-outdoor spot, ask us about surface protection against moisture and sun.
Sandstone Temple Price FAQs
How much does a small sandstone temple cost?
A small sandstone temple costs about ₹19,000–₹39,000 for 2 ft, ₹29,000–₹49,000 for 3 ft, and ₹44,000–₹69,000 for 4 ft. These prices are for the temple only. Installation is charged separately.
What is the best size for a small home temple?
A 2 ft sandstone temple suits apartments and compact corners. A 3 ft size works well for living rooms and small pooja rooms. A 4 ft mandir suits dedicated pooja rooms with higher ceilings.
Why do two sandstone temples of the same size have different prices?
Carving depth, stone thickness, number of components and design complexity change the price. A plain 2 ft mandir costs much less than a heavily carved 2 ft mandir with jali and a shikhar.
Is the idol included in the price?
The listed price generally covers the temple structure only. Idol pricing is usually separate. Confirm exact inclusions for your size and design before you order.
Can I place a sandstone temple in an apartment or on an upper floor?
Yes, but confirm the finished weight first. Sandstone is heavy, and floor load capacity differs by building and society.
Does a sandstone temple arrive in separate pieces?
Yes. It is delivered in separate carved pieces, such as pillars, panels and the main structure. We assemble it on site to match the design and stone finish you agreed on.
Which is better: Bansi Paharpur, Dholpur or red sandstone?
Bansi Paharpur has a warm pink to rose tone. Dholpur ranges from cream to pale pink. Red sandstone gives a deeper, traditional look. Choose based on your interior colours.
Can I customise the size, design and carving?
Yes. You can customise size, carving depth and jali patterns based on your reference image, wall measurements and preferred stone.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery usually takes 1–3 weeks. The exact schedule depends on size, carving detail and current order volume. We confirm it once the design, stone and dimensions are final.
Do you deliver across India?
Yes. We deliver sandstone temples across India and have completed projects in 25+ states.
How do I clean a sandstone temple?
Dust it regularly with a soft, dry brush, especially in carved areas. Wipe oil and kumkum spills quickly because sandstone is porous. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners.
